CDBABY.COM (06/12/15): An Artistic Storm of Riffs, Lyrics & Succinct Guitars.
I started off the year (2014) with the seeds of 13 brand new songs under my belt, some of which would make it onto a future project. There was plenty of time to tighten everything up, later. In the meantime, I needed to gear up for the Shell Game Trilogy (with release dates staggered all the way down the year). By mid-summer, I decided to carve out nine days from a very tight schedule to make new music. There was one goal to this very precious time: finish writing enough songs for one hour's worth of material (destined for release in 2015). I already had the semblance of an album in mind, so there was no pressure. All I had to do was come up with a couple of cool songs to finish off the pre-existing album.
It's strange. It's easy to think that in order for something to be really good, there has to be a lot of effort involved. That's usually the case. Even with writing songs, there's a lot of... cultivating of a certain kind of mindset in order to create new music. And, this time, I wouldn't have to go far to bring home the few songs I was looking for. This was house money. But..., it soon became clear that I wasn't writing songs for the album that I thought I was. Somehow, an artistic door opened that I didn't even know I was looking for. THESE songs were so different from the previous ones. Words and riffs were just flying out of the ether and landing in a part of my imagination that I had never experienced before. I was running out of song for the words that were flying into my head. I found myself jumping out of bed at 6:30 a.m. with riffs ready to go. Normally, I'm very happy to write one song a day during a concentrated writing cycle. THIS time, there were FOUR days when multiple songs were written in just ONE day. Two of those days, I wrote three songs. It was crazy. It didn't even seem like I was trying. It was all SO effortless. This writing cycle wasn't fueled by ambition or effort but by being. Things just kept coming at me. I was tuned into some crazy wavelength. I found myself exploring grooves that were outside of my norm. The songs were snarkier. Lyrical ideas overflowed and filled page after page, sometimes even the backs of pages had to be used to contain the torrent of words. Arrangements were tighter. Guitar solos became quick and to the point, downright succinct in fact. The ideas that were coming to me that weren't grandiose, but contained a different way of me looking at the world. I decided to shelve the album, One Foot Out The Door and pursue this particular creative train of thought.
This is the story about The Door that opened in my mind, and led to this collection of songs.

THE STORY BEHIND, ONE FOOT OUT THE DOOR.
CDBABY.COM (06/12/15): The Train Kept A Rollin'...
One Foot Out The Door was mostly done when my musical artistic self collided with The Door and a hiatus had to occurr. This album was shelved because it was so completly different from the other, ...but it was shelved with respect because it contains all of the things that I love about music. The two writing cycles were so completely different from each other and it took a long time for the right flavors to finish showing themselves to get this album completed. I wrote a lot of songs in that search.
The songs for this album are more guitar-driven and blues oriented but not really in an old fashioned sort of way. My goal here was to take the old blues rock blueprint and push it forwards into a modern sound, not just emulate the past but (hopefully) move the past into a new direction. Space was carved for more guitar expression as well as different sonic textures, sometimes within the same song. The epitome of what I was shooting for creatively, lies within the song, "A Wind Is Gonna Blow", which is seven minutes of raunchy minor riffs and guitar mayhem.
There were a lot of false starts getting to the songs that I was looking for while completing this album. In fact, I wrote so many songs in that search that it became truly difficult to cull them down to just one hour's worth of material. It wasn't just a matter of picking out favorite songs but rather the songs that would make a cohesive and strong album together. The final tally: 79 minutes and 58 seconds (which included a last minute song). This writing cycle was seeded around the new year (2014) and songs were still being written as late as May (2015). It's funny, out of these two albums that represent 2015 to me, ...one came very quickly and the other was crafted slowly. I am proud of both.

FACEBOOK (06/03/15): Two new albums are on the way! Dates to be revealed soon. Now I can tell you the album names. The first of the two is called, The Door, which has a certain flavor to it that none of my previous albums have had... I'll define that better, later. The second release, entitled One Foot Out The Door contains more ambitious guitar heavy compositions. We're working the cover artwork... RIGHT NOW (for both). I'm very excited about both of them. They're very different from each other but they still sound like me. Ha. Anyway. I'm uploading the second album this very evening. Finally starting the process that will set them free to roam.

FACEBOOK (05/12/15): I was very close to finalizing the 2nd of my two upcoming releases for this year, when in walked a very interesting song (that I wrote this weekend). The song is called, "On The Borderline". Its presence makes what was already a difficult situation ...even harder. It's one of THOSE songs. I am still trying to unravel this one out. It's not a done deal. BUT, despite having a lot of songs earmarked for this project, I already feel that this one might be too irresistible to leave off. We shall see.
